Winning schools demonstrate leadership in keeping students fit

Three Oʻahu schools will each receive a state-of-the-art $100,000 fitness center: Kahalu‘u Elementary School, Aliamanu Middle School, and Major Sheldon Wheeler Middle School.

The centers will be unveiled during ribbon-cutting ceremonies this fall.

The schools were chosen for demonstrating leadership in getting and keeping their students fit by the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils (NFGFC). The winning schools filled out a short application, sent photos of the equipment they currently have, and submitted a short video explaining why they should receive a fitness center, how it would be used, and shared about their school culture.

Through its multimillion-dollar DON’T QUIT! campaign, the NFGFC will provide fitness centers to schools in 46 states this year, and the foundation plans to reach all 50 states in the coming years.

Public/private partnerships finance the fitness centers with companies like The Coca-Cola Company, Carelon Foundation, and Nike, and do not rely on taxpayer dollars or state funding. Fit Supply provides the fitness equipment.
