They took part in sign waving, other activities before the primary

Hawaii State Teachers Association members submitted more than 700 entries in a contest to boost political action in favor of HSTA-recommended candidates before this month’s primary election.

The contest awarded members’ entries for completing different tasks, such as submitting a selfie of themselves sign waving for HSTA-backed candidates or holding their mail-in ballots. They also earned entries by viewing HSTA’s list of recommended candidates on our website. The entrants’ names were randomly drawn by a computerized contest app to determine the winners.

Congratulations to Kapolei Middle School teacher Shirley Yamauchi, from HSTA’s Leeward Chapter, who won the grand prize, an iPad Air! Her winning entry contained a photo of her and other HSTA members sign waving for former HSTA President Corey Rosenlee, who is the Democratic nominee to represent Royal Kunia, West Loch, and Waipahu in the State House.

Eight other HSTA members will receive HSTA swag bags. They include Molokai Chapter President Briann Starkey, who won for turning in a selfie with a group of HSTA members sign waving for congressional candidate Jill Tokuda on Molokai.

Windward Chapter member Micah Pregitzer won a swag bag for turning in a mail-in ballot selfie.

The other winners were:

  • Sean Barrett, Honolulu Chapter
  • Brandon Cha, Leeward Chapter
  • Romeo Eleno, Lanai Chapter
  • Kori Harvey, Central Chapter
  • Shannon Kealoha, Maui Chapter
  • Hope McKeen, Hilo Chapter

Mahalo to every HSTA member throughout the state who supported candidates in the primary through various activities.
